First High School Night Football in Oklahoma

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

Night football for Oklahoma high school's first came on September 28, 1929 when Tulsa Central took on Sapulpa at Tulsa's Lee Stadium. Interesting enough, the first college football game in Oklahoma came on the same night when Oklahoma A & M took on Northwestern State University at Lewis Field in Stillwater. Also just as interesting was that both scores ended at 12-0 with Tulsa Central and Oklahoma A & M claiming victory.

The Braves from Tulsa Central High School not only had the first game under the lights but played every one of their home games at night in 1929.

Oklahoma City's first night football game was scheduled between Oklahoma A & M and the OCU Goldbugs on October 11th, 1929 but just as the teams were ready to take the field, a sudden storm arose and knocked out power to all of the lights. The game was played the next evening.

Oklahoma City's first high school night football game was played at OCU on November 8, 1929 between Classen and Blackwell with Classen winning 18-0.

Soon after, light poles mushroomed on almost all Oklahoma high school fields and the old 3 o'clock kickoff became a thing of the past.

The very first high school football game played under the lights happened on November 19, 1925 in Wyoming where Casper defeated Midwest 20-0.
